AOL users consistently have the most problems with ebook downloads, which is due to their browser software. If that happens to you, Don't Panic! It's pretty easy to handle.

If you get the "invalid handle" error when you click a download link, try right-clicking (Mac users, click and hold) and selecting "Save File As..." from the pop-up menu.) Your browser may prompt you to choose a destination for the file it is about to download. Save the file onto your desktop or into a different folder you select. When you click OK, the download will begin. It's just that simple.

Because some eBook files are large, you will want to remain active within AOL so you're not logged off in the middle of a download. AOL has been having sporadic download problems recently resulting in incomplete downloads because AOL cuts off the download before it is complete, and gives you no warning message. If you experience this, try the following:

A. Delete the incomplete file and try the download again.

B. Try downloading using Internet Explorer or Netscape rather than the browser built into AOL. Remember that if you are an AOL user you don't have to use the AOL web browser. Netscape and Internet Explorer will work just fine with your AOL account. With Windows 98, Internet Explorer is already installed! Just log on to AOL normally, go to the internet as you usually do, and then launch either Netscape or Internet Explorer. If you have Windows 98, just click the "e" icon in the lower left of your screen, next to the "Start" button.

If you have an AOL account and still have downloading problems, let me suggest the following as practice. Go to Google, type in "chocolate cake pdf" and many pdf file listings will come up. The "pdf" stands for an Adobe acrobat pdf file, which is what an ebook is. Now, click on any of those pdf files and it will start to download. So click on any one and see what happens. When you click on it, your computer starts initiating software whose job is to try to download the ebook. Give it time and be patient because downloading, especially with dial-up, takes awhile. The Floaters ebook is large so it will take longer to download.

Anyway, practice once or twice if you don't seem to get it right. Try downloading any of these free files without worry and then you'll understand what works in downloading for you -- right click or left click or do whatever seems appropriate and then you'll realize how to do it. The first time is confusing, but after that it's always easy. You just need to learn how. If you can download any other pdf file from the internet, you can certainly download the Floaters book but it will just take a little longer since our ebook is larger. That's it, it's not hard ... take a breath and you can do it (the first time I did it was frightening but now I do it several times a week). If you download the ebook and you seem to have gotten a corrupted file (the book has missing pages, etc.) simply use the same link and download again. You won't be charged twice -- you are just charged for access to the link and can try to download it as many times as you'd like until you get it right. Remeber to be patient when downloading as even with fast computers it takes time. Your computer may even "lock" during the downloading procedure because it's occupied on downloading all the data.
